Owning an RV (recreational vehicle) brings a world of endless of possibilities. Have you finally retired and are ready to live full time in an RV and tour the country? Did you buy your RV for weekend getaways with your kids, or maybe your new RV is your hunt camp? Before you hit the road, make sure that you have the right RV insurance.
What is RV insurance and how does it differ from car insurance?
We are asked this question on a regular basis especially for those RV’s that are towed with a vehicle. Your auto insurance does not cover your RV and vice versa. If you are driving your motorhome and towing your vehicle, your RV insurance does not cover your towed vehicle.
Both RV insurance and car insurance policies provide liability coverage, collision coverage and comprehensive coverage, however, they are different coverages. The coverage for an RV might have a higher liability since it is larger and could cause more damage in an accident. Liability coverage for an RV could also include campground liability. This protection would cover incidents that may happen on a campsite in a campground or in an RV long term living community.
RV coverage has additional elements that car insurance doesn’t require. Because an RV blends both a home and auto, it requires specialized insurance. RV insurance needs to cover the personal items inside of an RV as well as interior items such as the furniture, appliances, kitchenette and bedding.
Many people use a RV as their primary home or as their home away from home. RV coverage for them would include options similar to a homeowner’s policy to help cover potential risks. Car owners only use their vehicle for driving so do not need this coverage. Your homeowners insurance is not the same as RV insurance. These are 2 different policies.
RV insurance can pay for accommodations, food and transportation if the RV becomes damaged or uninhabitable while traveling. Cars are used for transportation only so car insurance does not offer this feature. However, car insurance can cover towing and roadside assistance.
Both RVs and cars need insurance. Car insurance is required in Florida. RV insurance is also required in Florida for all motorized RVs. Both cars and RVs have a minimum liability of $10,000 for personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 for property damage liability (PDL).
If you have taken a loan out on your RV, then your lender may require more insurance than what is required by the state. Also, different RV parks may require specific types of insurance so make sure to review that before purchasing your RV policy. Learn more about RV insurance.
